Introduced Species

Common Name Scientific Name Use of Wetland
Mosquito Fish Gambusia or Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis Were introduced to control mosquito larvae but prefer other invertebrates. Have a fast breeding rate making them able to efficiently deplete resources
Redfin Redfin Perca fluviatilis Prey on the young of native fish effecting recruitment numbers, as well as many invertebrates
European Carp European carp Cyprinus carpo Feeding on whatever is available; carp are highly adapted to slow moving waters. They consume food sources that are found in the sediments disturbing the cycles of other plants and animals.
Rabbits European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus Compete with native wildlife for food resources. Have a high reproductive rate, therefore are devastating to vegetation along the waterways in large numbers
Feral Cat Feral cat Felis catus Prey on many native birds, mammals and reptiles along the banks of wetlands. Attracted by the large numbers of fauna in these areas
Feral Pig Feral pig Sus scrofa Disturb wetlands by wallowing as well as feasting on many plants and animals. The up-rooting of plants causes erosion to the banks
